Cell Analogy Project

Today is the final day to work on the project.

Thursday, October 24, 2019

Cell Analogy Project

You will work to compare the organelles of the animal cell to the parts of a factory, city, country, movie or any other organization of choice.
You will work in groups of 2.

You must draw the items that you are comparing the organelle to. In addition, list the function of the organelle and explain why you think the comparison is similar to the organelle.

The organelles to be included are:
1) The mitochondrion
2) Golgi apparatus
3) Nucelus
4) Ribosomes
5) Rough Endoplasmic reticulum
6) Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum
7) Plasma membrane
8) Cytoplasm
9) Lysosome
10) Vesicle
11) Perosisome
12) Cytoskeleton
13) Nucleolus.

Points will be awarded for the presentation ( appearance).

Functions of the Organelles

The drawing of the animal cell is due on Friday, October 25, 2019
We will discuss the organelles present in the plant cell but  not the animal cell and vice versa.

A Tour of the Cell

The microscope played a significant role in realization that living things were made up of cells. This realization lead to the Cell Theory:
1) All living things are made of one or more cells,
2) Cells come from pre-existing cells,
3) Nothing less than a cell can show the properties of life.

Macromolecules Continued, Proteins and Nucleic Acids

Image result for proteins basic structure

It is only in the nature of the varian (R) that amino acids differ from another.  There are only about twenty differetn amino acids that occur in the protein of living organisms, although there are about 2000 natural and artifically made amono acids.

There are ten amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained in the diet.

Nucleic Acids:
If proteins are the building blocks of life, then nucleic acids are the blue print. The DNA has the instructions and directs the RNA in the functioning of the cells and the synthesis of proteins.

Introduation to The Macromolecules / Test Results.

Those of you who were absent on Friday, will have until Wednesday, October 9th. to make up the test.

The 4 Types of Macromolecules are:
1) Carbohydrates
2) Proteins
3) Lipids
4) Nucleic Acids

Hydrocarbon

You will be introduced to the versatile carbon compounds.
Carbon is able to form single, double and triple bonds.  Carbon compounds can be straight chain, branched  or ring structure

You will spend the time drawing hydrocarbon compounds, straight chain, branched, ring. In addition, you will draw compounds with single, double, and triple bonds.
